Tattingstone is some 5 miles from Ipswich and Manningtree both with mainline railway
stations. Situated within walking distance of Alton
Water and a short drive from the sailing facilities,
ideally located for the Rivers Orwell and Stour. Ipswich
is the County town of Suffolk with its shopping malls,
revitalized dock site, vibrant commercial economy and
good state and private schools. Manningtree to the
south also offers a wide selection of shops, pubs and
schools. The A12 is readily accessible (2.5miles)
linking south to the M25 and London and north to the A
14 and the Midlands.
There are twenty listed buildings in the parish, and the
church of St Mary and the Tattingstone Wonder are
grade II* listed.
The Tattingstone Wonder was built around 1790 for a
local Squire called Edward White. It was originally built
as a pair of cottages, and a third cottage was added at
a later date, including a mock church tower and
facade. Apparently, built to give his neighbours
“something to wonder at”.
The village has two public houses, the Wheatsheaf and
the White Horse, as well as a primary school, village
hall and access to walks for Alton Water.
