Flatford

The beautiful hamlet of Flatford is
situated close to East Bergholt in Suffolk. It is most
famous for Flatford Mill, Willy Lott’s Cottage and Bridge
Cottage, immortalised in the paintings of John
Constable.

Walking in John Constable’s footsteps, you can take a
wander through the places in Flatford that inspired his
most famous paintings. The Flatford and Constable
walking trail is featured on ITV’s Britain’s Favourite
Walks: Top 100. This is a moderate, 4 to 7 mile walk
that explores the picturesque Stour Valley and Dedham
Vale, made famous by the 18th-century paintings of
John Constable, England’s foremost landscape artist of
the time.

Flatford Mill was owned by the Constable family. It
continued as a working mill until 1900 when it became
a private residence. In 1943, the mill was acquired by
the National Trust and leased to the Field Study
Council.
