Welcome to Village Life

The essence of the village of East Bergholt and the surrounding Dedham Vale area is the combination of influences that have conspired to create an area that offers convenience and practicalities within a highly appealing rural setting.

The village and surrounding area are complimented by excellent road links taking only an hour or so to central London, however the temptation to travel is curtailed in dining terms by the surrounding villages and towns offering superb restaurants and pubs ranging from good, simple pub food at the Red Lion in the centre of East Bergholt to fine dining at Le Talbooth in Dedham.

The area attracts a wide variety of people from village residents whose families have lived here for generations through to long term London residents that have come to love the area and made the move out to enable a mixture of lifestyles, living in the countryside yet utilising excellent transport links to commute into London. This brings a diverse and friendly atmosphere to the area creating the idyllic lifestyle many crave.

The East of England and in particular the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty running through the centre of our area from Brantham in the East to Wormingford in the West is considered one of the most beautiful in the UK. With beautiful scenery to explore on the many footpaths that link the villages and communities across open countryside, its appeal is quickly appreciated by all who visit.

Culture & Events

Dedham Vale is rich in culture, benefiting from strong traditional trade links into Manningtree and again Dedham Vale itself was part of the main route into London on foot or by cart historically. No mention of the area in historical terms would be complete without the inclusion of John Constable, his artwork most celebrated in the Haywain painting based on the picturesque meeting of the counties of Suffolk and Essex on the river Stour at Flatford Mill.

The area was called home by another famous artist, Sir Alfred Munnings, who through his extensive range of paintings encapsulated so many of the features that make this area so attractive. The Castle House in Dedham occupied by Sir Alfred Munnings and his wife houses the largest collection of paintings by the artist and is a keenly attended attraction for fans of his work from across the world.

On the lighter side of village culture the annual May Bank Holiday round the village pram race is a high octane event like no other, the format is simple, the race is held between the village pubs and consists of finely tuned push carts of various styles pushed by a wide range of athletes. ‘Racing incidents’ are looked upon in a very unique manner and the race really brings the community together.

Endless Green Space

The Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is crisscrossed by a wealth of footpaths. Principal among these are the number that follow the path of the river Stour along the vale, walking from East Bergholt to Dedham is a lovely quiet walk in the summer time leading to the boats and meadows around Dedham mill, and in the winter time lunch at the Sun Inn.

With expanses of fields over undulating valleys, the local lanes provide great opportunities for quick walks and the area has a strong rural feel combined with many modern amenities all adding to the appeal.

As mentioned the areas historic ties with the celebrated artist John Constable.

It is a pleasure for us all to be able to work in an area of such great natural value. This allows us to be involved with the landscape and community embracing its transition through the seasons and changes over time.
